Royal Caribbean: Not the Average Cruise

Royal Caribbean is wowing their guests once again through yet another innovation in the customer experience market. Already unique with their thorough port visit plans and interactive onboard activities, Royal Caribbean is now going active. So, if you're active and the idea of sitting on a boat all day makes you sick, you might reconsider a cruise with Royal Caribbean.
Royal Caribbean is releasing some cool innovations on their new ship, Freedom of the Seas. They're out to prove just how unique a ship can be and in doing so shattering the antiquated notion of a cruise being a passive vacation. New attractions like the a surfing simulator called the "Flow Rider," rock climbing walls, an ice skating rink and intense workouts through their "Ship Shape" program might have you leaving the ship well established in a new exercise regimen. Voyagers can enjoy personal training by professionals who teach everything from good posture to yoga. For passengers who want more of a challenge, look no further than "Boot Camp X-treme" circuit training or "Salsamanina" dance classes. This ship has something for everyone, and Royal Caribbean recognizes that people want more than just gluttony in their vacation. No longer do passengers need to worry about losing their cruise ship weight gain after a week or more of eating and lounging.
In addition, Royal Caribbean helps you explore the destinations you visit. Pick up a city map and follow a preplanned jogging route which takes you safely through the city you're visiting, allowing you to freely breeze through the sites at your leisure. After all, exploring native culture is always better when experienced first hand. Royal Caribbean provides the tools for their clients to safely explore, and gives them the freedom to customize their vacation to their particular tastes and interests.
Their exceptional dedication to passenger satisfaction is most readily seen in their Gold Anchor Service standard. Don't be surprised if your room attendant remembers everything from your name to your little kids favorite stuffed animal; or if your waiter recalls what you prefer to drink with particular meals. Royal Caribbean offers Gold Standard Service in an effort to exceed your expectations, and is one of the elements that makes the Royal Caribbean experience something unique.
Marmarth Research Foundation
The travel market is changing as people are now looking for more than a "wine and dine" experience. If you're a "meaningful experience" seeking traveler, you should check out the Marmarth Research Foundation (MRF). The Marmarth Research Foundation provides the perfect educational getaway that delivers an unforgettable experience to its participants. What was once a service oriented program providing inner-city high school students with an archaeological adventure is now a week-long program for participants 14 years of age and up to come get their hands dirty digging up dinos and educating themselves in the process.
Here's how it works, Marmath attendees arrive at the beginning of the week and stay in bunks in the small town (144 people) of Marmath, North Dakota (located about seven miles from the Montana State Line). Once there, they become completely immersed in the science of Paleontology, receiving personalized training for their individual level of skill (anyone from a novice to a professional can go). Guests participate in every aspect of the project including the initial discovery, the excavation, and even the eventual mounting of the fossils. In addition to the field work, guests can attend nightly classes that teach about fossil identification and anatomy, casting and molding techniques, as well as fossil preparation and restoration.
Project prices are quite reasonable, costing a single participant $750 a week. This fee covers all meals, equipment and supplies, lodging, transportation to and from the dig sites, and all materials for course work. All they have to do is show up, enjoy the experience, and Marmarth takes care of the rest. This one of a kind experience has earned Marmarth recent attention in nytimes.com, where they acclaim Marmarth as a unique opportunity to familiarize oneself with the environment and history of our earth. In addition to contributing to the local museum, participants will be able to take home some of the items they discover. This is the perfect trip for families or individuals trying to connect with each other and their environment. The experience of working shoulder to shoulder with archaeology experts is truly unlike any other vacation getaway!
Del Sol-Lighting up the Travel Market
.jpg)
Beginning as a meager kiosk in a local mall, Del Sol utilized their product technology to provide potential clients with a unique and family friendly retail experience. Del Sol understands the cultural capital that the traveling industry procures: people want to bring home a piece of their trip to share with others. In addition to providing such an accessory, Del Sol's innovative color-changing product is shown off by happy returning customers-thus, everything from the selling of a product to its daily use reminds customers of the vacation, adventure, or outing they went on. Del Sol uses the light of the sun to change the product colors. An early version of this concept was developed for NASA's space suits, which get a lot of sun up in space. Del Sol engineered its proprietary, shape-changing Spectrachrome T crystals that change to a different color when they take on a different shape. The sun's UV rays cause the crystals to change shape temporarily, which dramatically re-colors the product that the crystals are in. It's a safe, fun technology that turns Del Sol products into dazzling visual wonders that last for years.
Now established along the routes of popular cruises, Del Sol attracts customers who come to enjoy the experience of their retail stores. Ultra-Violet lamps provide light allowing customers to see the changes in the clothing, sunglasses, footwear, and other products for sale. One client is reported to have been so excited by the Del Sol store that she remained at the shop excitedly coaching visitors with the UV light. Del Sol offers a bright, friendly, hands on environment in which the client can create their own memories. Del Sol's mission is to brighten and enhance all they encounter, and their growth reflects the effectiveness of this stance. Del Sol understands that customers want an exciting experience that they can share with others every time the sun comes up. Del Sol staffs their stores with youthful interns and experienced, company taught managers in an effort to further influence the bright impact created by their clothing. Their managing strategy provides highly trained, energetic individuals who feel they are on vacation-making them all the more excited-while at the same time effectively selling the experience. Through this tactic, Del Sol competes against the local retail stores with owners who may tire of ceaseless cruise ships. Del Sol is innovatively fresh in both their product and management style, and is proving their success through their exceedingly fast growth.
Club Quarters: "The Smart Hotel" Meeting the Needs of the Organization

The recent "bed wars" that raged throughout the hotel industry have caused us to reflect on what might be the next area of competition in hotel chains. An article in the Wall Street Journal revealed an increasing desire for business travelers to have minimal human contact with other guests and employees during their hotel stay. Although this notion might seem strange, it's an emerging trend that's changing the hotel industry yet again. Club Quarters is one hotel that's picked up on this fad, evolving into a chain that's specifically focused on meeting the human-free want. Club Quarters has adopted a new technology that enables members to check themselves in and out through an ATM-like machine in the lobby. These machines generate room keys and billing statements, minimizing interaction and facilitating a hassle free experience for the weary traveler. Other hotels are quickly catching on, realizing that sometimes less is more when it comes to customer interaction. After all, the key to good business is to simply provide the right thing for the customer.
One of Club Quarter's core concepts is to cater to business travelers and government agencies by offering condo-like services. If your company frequently travels to a certain place it might not be a bad idea to invest a long-term deal from Club Quarters. They sell rooms to companies and government agencies in a time-share like format. Any rooms that are left over on any given night are wholesaled out and can be booked through online agencies. Club Quarters fits the expense needs of business customers while providing a feeling that its customers are coming home, and not just sleeping in another generic hotel room.
Customers can have newspapers, magazines, and even exercise equipment delivered to their room, allowing them to keep to themselves if they so desire. However, for the more interactive guest, Club Quarters provides a traditional exercise room, restaurant, and pool. Club Quarters makes their visitors feel at home by providing personal choices. With the freedom to interact or keep to yourself, Club Quarters builds off of the needs and wants of the individual.
Getting a Little Orbitz TLC
In an attempt to stop the slip from innovative company to commodity, Orbitz is announcing a new brand intended to help bolster their services by offering "the ultimate" travel experience to their users. Orbitz recognizes that people don't just want a cheap travel experience, but they want to be well informed and put in control with choices and options. Orbitz is actualizing these needs through customer networking and technological advances that put the passenger in the drivers seat.
One of the new innovations Orbitz is featuring is the Hotel Scorecard. This program allows customers to rate their experiences at different hotels and focuses on elements like customer service, things to do around town, dining, moneysaving, and an iconic star rating. This service combines articles written by travel researchers as well as customer feedback in an easily accessed format. Again, the emphasis here is on empowering the customer by providing them with timely, and helpful, information.
Perhaps the biggest innovation OrbitzTLC has achieved is in regards to their technological developments. OrbitzTLC proactively anticipates barriers to travel with superior services that ease dealing with the unavoidable. There are a lot of unknowns in the world of travel and Orbitz is seeking to minimize those discrepancies. Orbitz keeps their customers and suppliers informed and updated, giving them the control to make smarter travel plans. Orbitz customers who book a flight on most airlines can receive OrbitzTLC Air Alerts (formerly Care Alerts) to help make their travel experience more efficient and enjoyable. These alerts help travelers by making them aware of potential weather hazards, strikes, airport conditions, gate changes and baggage claim information, in addition to listing street closures, or anything else that might influence the timeliness of their flight plans. This up-to-the-minute information offers a new experience to travelers. With OrbitzTLC, gone are the days of waiting cluelessly while your travel plan develops. The updates Orbitz offers are easy to access since travelers can designate how to receive new info-by mobile phone, pager, PDA, or email. They can also designate the timeframe in which they want to receive information on the status of their flight. Orbitz customers can also enroll up to six family members, colleagues, or friends to receive OrbitzTLC Air Alerts.
OrbitzTLC is fighting to win back the online travel market by working to meet the demanding needs of travelers. By putting the passenger in power, Orbitz provides a comprehensive service that's moving their company beyond the commodity industry.
OCEAN DOME: the Perfect Vacation

Imagine the perfect day at the beach, warm and sunny, bug and UV ray free. Now imagine it in Japan, inside a huge climate-controlled dome. Meet Ocean Dome, Japan's foremost vacation hot spot for overly concerned parents, stressed out businesspeople who can't deal with something else going wrong, and young teens who want to see what the hype is all about. The size of Ocean Dome is impressive. In fact, it's listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's largest indoor water park, measuring 985 feet in length, 330 feet in width. And the temperature stays right around 80 degrees all year round.
At Ocean Dome you won't find rain, sharks, or dangerous under currents. However, it does have a surf that comes in once an hour, a volcano that erupts every hour, and a clan of professional surfers who add a certain, unexplainable ambiance to the whole experience. You can watch the surfers on the artificial waves of The Great Bank or try body-boarding yourself. Activities like Ocean Dome Body Board Time feature successive waves that are perfect for body-boarding and allows even beginners a chance to get a feel for the sport. Ocean Dome also has thrilling water slides, you can choose to ride an inner tube down the mountain on the Rocky Slider, or slide down through mist and rain on the fast and exciting Dragon Slider. For a more intense journey, climb to the height of the third floor of the Ocean Dome and slide down a 40-degree incline at speeds of around 25 miles per hour on the new Powerful Water Slider W WAVE. Kids Paradise is a pool just for little kids, complete with a slide. There is a splash block in the center to divide the one-foot from the two feet deep areas. And don't forget about Drift Woods, the floating pool that lulls you into a relaxing daze as you go with the flow, but beware the Dragon's rain squall that awaits you when you least expect it! In addition to the water activities, the dome also has shops where you can find the latest in swimsuit fashions or satisfy your appetite with drinks, fast food, light snacks, or full-scale restaurants that serve up the best in local Miyazaki cuisine. Why not forget your schedules, your timetables, and your worries and just spend a day playing in the water on your perfect vacation.
GUEST INVEST: the Big Payoff
Perhaps you've been to one of those horrible time-share sales events, only to discover that you've invested thousands of dollars into a vacation home you only get to use once a year. Your feeling jipped, poor, and in need of good nap. Timeshares don't have to be this way. They can be fun, even profitable. Don't believe us? Check out Guest Invest.
Guest Invest is a cool company in the UK who sells luxury hotel rooms to people who the retain 50% of the rooms annual revenue, in addition to the perk of being able to stay for free up to 52 nights a year. When you buy a luxury hotel room with Guest Invest, you receive half of that revenue for yourself, earning you money while others sleep. You can also stay in your room free of charge for up to 52 nights a year or put it into your SIPP.
Founded by entrepreneur Johnny Sandelson, Guest Invest's new concept in commercial property investment was successfully launched at Guesthouse West in London's Notting Hill in March 2004. Over 10,000 inquiries were generated and rooms were sold out within eight weeks. Investors in Guesthouse West are currently enjoying returns in excess of 6%. Following the success of the Notting Hill's Guesthouse West, Guest Invest has recently added a new Central London Hotel - called Nest - to its portfolio. The hotel is minutes walk from Paddington and rooms are now available for sale from 175,000 Euros (about $212,000) on a 999-year lease. Room owners also have access to London's most glamorous private members' club, Home House.
The Times (UK) appreciates the idea behind Guest Invest offering that, "This new concept offers people an innovative buy-to-let property product with no management hassles, no worries about tenants, more capital growth opportunities and better tax breaks." And the Sunday Times (UK) likes the idea because "Investors in Guesthouse West have earned an income of 6.5% a year after charges. That compares favorably with yields from typical buy-to-let properties in London and comes without the hassle of managing your own property." So while Guest Invest seems to be a worthwhile investment, it appears that only rich people can get on board. The Guest Invest website lists strict guidelines about annual income and other assets potential buyers must have before being considered for a membership with the Guest Invest family. Even if this opportunity is out of reach for most of us, it's comforting to know that the played out time share idea has been disrupted by a hip, luxurious business model that people can't wait to be a part of.

EASY CRUISE: Shuffleboard Free

Everyone deserves a break, a vacation from the ordinary at a price they can afford. Enter EasyCruise, yet another 'easy' company from serial entrepreneur Stelios Haji-Ioannou (who goes by Stelios). EasyCruise is essentially a frills-free cruise that takes away the on board glitz and glam to make room in pocketbooks. Most of the travelers aboard easyCruise One are young adults (20's and 30's) who know how to make their own fun. They don't need Vegas-style revues, extravagant rooms, fine dining, or countless on board pools to have a good time. While EasyCruise ships aren't fancy, they're also not boring. There's a hot tub (just one), a bar, a coffee shop, a few restaurants, and Amigo, a small store that supplies, amongst other things, bottled water and souvenirs. And while you won't find shuffleboard, EasyCruise does offer some interesting on board activities like water balloon bowling and a spoon-through-the-clothes relay.
EasyCruise is most famous for it's life-vest orange decorating scheme and Swedish approach to design. The cabins are orange, the towels are orange, the outside of the ship is, you guessed it, orange. Although there is a notable abundance of this sometimes-aggressive pigment, it's not overpowering. Communal areas (Hot Tub Deck, Sports Bar) offer a more ambient palette, reminding passengers that they're on a cruise ship and not back in their college dorm. Speaking of college dorms, the cabins are small and sparse, no closets or furniture other than a platform bed and a high shelf. Even though these accommodations are less than luxurious, they are modern and well designed (think Ikea on a boat). While the guest cabins only offer the bare necessities, they are equipped with bathrooms that feature futuristic glass and chrome fixtures, larger than usual showers (sans curtain), and frosted glass walls.
Perhaps the best reason to embark on a voyage with EasyCruise is their port stop schedule. EasyCruise arrives at a variety of ports (including Barbados and the French Riviera) around 10 AM, and gives passengers between 12 and 14 hours of exploration before the ship sails again. EasyCruise's guests enjoy the extended port stops because they open up areas of native culture not seen during business hours, essentially painting a more culturally accurate picture of everyday life. By putting passengers more intimately in touch with exotic cultures, low prices, and like minded traveling companions, EasyCruise is disrupting the less than adventurous world of big boat cruises, blue haired ladies, and buffet lines.
HYDROPOLIS: Under the Sea

Imagine going on a vacation that made you feel like a little mermaid, and no, we aren't talking about Disneyland. Meet Hydropolis, the world's first underwater vacation retreat soon to be located in Dubai. This $500 million hotel is scheduled to open in 2008, offering visitors an experience unlike anything they've ever known. While Hydropolis features a unique, cutting edge design, the hotel is also founded on the simpler things in life.
The main idea behind the hotel is water, the "elixir of life" that consumes our bodies as well as our world. Hydropolis offers man an opportunity to go back to the beginning of time and explore the "last uninhabited frontiers of earth." If the last frontiers of earth don't hold your attention, you can also check out the spa that features one of a kind hydrotherapy treatments, eat at one of three sophisticatedly themed restaurants, or catch a late night underwater light show from your own suite. In addition to the fun, vacation-esque elements of Hydropolis, there are also "down to business" attributes that include conference facilities and a marine biology research lab.
Hydropolis is being proposed as the "first and only location in Dubai where staying out in the open, even at the summer temperature levels, will be a delight. This will be brought about by artificial clouds of fog, by setting air in motion over the surface of the water in connection with the mild shade of bloating sails and artificial clouds of pneumatic constructions." Wow is right, it appears that Hydropolis is working hard to be more than just a hotel; it wants to be it's own little world. And that's really where the experiential aspect of vacationing here comes into play. Hydropolis plans on transporting their guests to a different universe, almost like taking a trip to the moon. At the same time, they don't want you to feel uncomfortable or alienated from the rest of Dubai. By implementing spas, ballrooms, restaurants, and theatres, guests are still able to enjoy more traditional vacation activities. And for those of you who aren't entirely comfortable with life under the sea, Hydropolis "features suites adjoining the hall with windows opening onto the familiar world of a 'street', with daylight and the generous proportions of a multi-storied complex."
HEAVENLY BED: Buying the Experience

Most people would agree that traveling (whether business or leisure) can be quite tiring, especially when you're forced to sleep on an uncomfortable (and questionably clean) bed. A startlingly high number of people are unhappy with hotel beds, and that's bad since people usually rent hotel rooms in order to have a place to sleep. Westin Hotels and Resorts picked up on the foul taste that hotel beds were leaving in guests' mouths and decided to do something about it. Westin really wanted their guests to feel at home, so much that they decided they would furnish their rooms with products and furniture so luxurious that Westin guests would want to take their rooms home.
Westin teamed up with mattress giant Simmons to create the Heavenly Bed, a ten layer, 900 coil, pillow top mattress that includes three sheets - ranging in thread count from 180 to 250, a down blanket - three versions for three different climates, a comforter, a crisp white duvet, and Five goose down / goose feather pillows. Heavenly Beds are so; well, heavenly that they're now selling about $100,000 worth a month. Since the launch of the Heavenly Bed, Westin has branched out to include bathroom goods as well, and we're not talking about those little containers of shampoo and conditioner. The double showerhead is one of the purchase worthy products available, as this product offers a fair share of water in the shower before a long, stressful business day. What Westin has done is to take a mediocre experience (staying at a hotel) and turned it into something that people want to remember forever. At the same time, they're creating loyal customers by saying, "you have this bed or this showerhead at home, and guess what, if you come here we have the exact same thing." They're helping people connect Westin Hotels to home, and that's a winning strategy you can sleep on.
YOTEL: Futuristic Rest

You're tired, hungry, uncomfortable, and you can't even call your significant other for sympathy because your phone battery is long dead and you refuse to cough up the exorbitant long-distance pay phone fee. You just want to take a nap, put down your carry-on, and have a few minutes to recharge yourself and your phone. Sounds like someone needs a Yotel room. Yotel is the cool new idea popping up in London's Heathrow and Gatwick airports. The idea is simple; give people their own private space where they can shower, change, read, or nap in between flights.
Maybe you only need a couple of hours; maybe you need a whole night, either way Yotel is ready to accommodate even the most disgruntled airline passenger. While Yotel rooms aren't big (108 square feet), they are packed with all the necessities a traveler could need. In each room you'll find a flat screen TV, a pull down desk, air conditioning, free Internet, and a personal bathroom. Expect to spend any where from $50 (for a four hour rental) to $140 (an overnight stay on the high end), a cost that doesn't seem so bad once you calculate the number of $11 martini's your rage might drive you to consume in four hours.
Yotel is a cool idea because it arose as a direct response to a very specific and commonly found need. Yotel disrupts the idea of a traditional hotel room by putting performance and convenience first (we know all hotels say they do this, but we beg to differ). You can't get any closer to the airport than being in the airport, and you may not need or want to spend the money on an over priced, run of the mill hotel a couple of miles away. Think about it, Yotel rooms are sleekly designed, individualized (price per hour or night), and offer all the goodies even the most techie tech geek could want.
KIMPTON HOTELS: WOMEN IN TOUCH

You've just arrived in your hotel room to find the horror of all horrors, a uni-brow. That's right, sometime between last Thursday and the plane trip you forgot to pluck that menacing little spot between your eyes. As a search for your tweezers turns up empty, tragedy unfolds. Should you shave it? Attempt to "wax" it with tape? Nope, no need, your friendly "Forgot It? We've Got It!" menu is waiting by your bedside for just such an occasion. A Kimpton staff member will be happy to bring up tweezers, a heating pad, or whatever other little life and death thing you forgot to pack. Kimpton knows that there are a lot of working women, many of whom stay at Kimpton hotels during work related trips. And while everyone wants to feel comfortable when traveling, an effect that can be rather elusive during business trips, Kimpton thinks that women deserve an especially nice time. It could be that 47 percent of their visiting road warriors are female, or perhaps that some of their most renowned executive staff are business savvy ladies themselves. In an effort to create the most relaxing, homey experience possible Kimpton offers services such as in room spa treatments and a 24 hour yoga channel accompanied by a complimentary yoga basket. And for those times when you just want to have a fun weekend with the girls, Kimpton features "Girlfriend's Getaway Packages" where you can experience wine tasting, live shows, and local hot spots in a stress free package made just for you. While most hotels say they want to accommodate their guests, Kimpton goes above and beyond to make each exhausted businesswoman feel like a queen.
SEABOURN: More Than a Cruise
Vacations are a time for rest and relaxation, a time when you can rejuvenate and escape the hassles of everyday life. In a world with an ever-growing population, it often seems at hotels that you're just another face in the crowd. If you're fed up with poor service, or service that doesn't quite meet your expectations, you should check out Seabourn Cruises. At Seabourn you'll find that the staff magically know your name and your luggage magically arrives in your ultra luxurious (and spacious) room shortly after you board. Seabourn wants you to know that you're not on a run of the mill cruise ship, but rather a first class yacht. Since Seabourn yachts are smaller than most commercial cruise ships, the personal experience becomes even more meaningful as the intimate spaces and experiences envelop your world. Seabourn offers something for everyone; from black tie dining to smoothies at the Veranda Cafe, your unique lifestyle is guaranteed to be accommodated. While just about any cruise line will leave you with new memories, Seabourn will be sure to rekindle those special moments every time you sail with them. Their highly personalized staff are expected to remember you, your quirks, and your preferences every time you come aboard. It would be cool to see Seabourn further personalize their guests experiences by offering a fleet of individual yachts, each equipped with luxury amenities and a crew to take guests on private mini-vacations.
KAUAI MARRIOTT RESORT AND BEACH CLUB: Putting Locals First

In a time when faceless corporations loom everywhere, finding a global corporation that really cares seems unlikely. We thought so too until we stumbled upon the Kauai Marriott Resort and Beach Club in Kauai, Hawaii. The Kauai Marriott strives to offer an authentic Hawaiian experience - from employees and design, to the food they serve and the intoxicating island music.
In 1994 when Marriott bought the hotel, formerly known as the Westin Hotel, Kauai was battling through an environmental and economic downfall; Hurricane Iniki had devastated the island, and unemployment was at a whopping 14 percent. Local islanders saw this as their opportunity to rebuild, but initially didn't trust the intentions of this mega corporation. The Marriott wisely wasted no time in investing in the cultural values and practices of the community in order to make sure that there was a solid relationship between the native residents and the hotel. Thus, rather than throwing a Grand Opening affair, the Marriott decided that they would rather spend the money by investing it into the community.
Mayor Maryanne Kusaka suggested that they donate the funds to the Kauai Food Bank, a local resource that was feeding 20 percent of the islands population. This act proved to the locals that Marriott was there for better or worse, and was fully intent on making Kauai a better place. From there, the Marriott continually worked with the Food Bank, eventually employing the bank as their food supplier. This created more jobs (in addition to the 90 percent of islanders employed by the new resort) and provided the Marriott with the fresh, authentic taste they needed in order to be an authentic, Hawaiian oasis. Marriott is on trend with Kauai. A recent report by the Travel Industry Association found that consumers are demanding travel experiences where they feel that their presence helps the community. This allows them to not only be part of the local community experience, but to feel like they're also adding value. Kauai Marriott shows that the travel industry has opportunities to build cultural capitol while at the same time generating increased revenue and word of mouth advertising.
BACKROADS: Travel off the Beaten Path

Tom Hale has always loved traveling the back roads. So much so that at one point he decided to make it his life's work and Backroads has existed ever since. Backroads is a travel company that gives customers the opportunity to experience incredible places, and is the world's most successful active travel company thanks to lots of passion and a smart business plan. Hale's dream of Backroads started when he was working as an Environmental Planner in Las Vegas. Late one night he had a vision of starting a bike touring company that would provide people with an escape from their everyday lives while satisfying their intense need to reconnect with Mother Nature. Hale worked day and night (he left his Environmental Planning career behind) to develop itineraries, maintain equipment, lead trips, and produce a catalog. That was 27 years ago. Today, Backroads plays host to more than 10,000 biking, walking, and multisport travelers around the world every year, and boasts more than 200 different trip itineraries that offer the finest lodging, dining, and cultural events in 37 countries across the globe. In total, they offer the most destinations, itineraries, and annual departures of all travel companies in the active vacation industry. Backroads is able to generate tons of positive word of mouth advertising thanks to publications like Travel + Leisure who frequently rate them as one of the world's top ten touring companies. They have many guests who repeatedly use their services, and estimate that 45% of their business each year is repeat, and that 30% of their guests are referred to Backroads by past guests.
If you're not sure that such an adventurous outing is right for you, Backroads works to put you at ease by supplying a van that doubles as a mobile refreshment center, bike repair shop, and secondary transportation unit for travelers who need a break. There's also a trailer that hauls all necessary luggage and gear, allowing you to enjoy the trip without having to worry about where your stuff is. And if roughing it doesn't sound like your cup of tea but you still want an amazing vacation experience, check out Backroads' Premiere Inn Trips that feature five star hotels and world class dining. You can also choose to participate in their Casual Inn Trips that offer three star lodging and family run diners. ELEVATE DESTINATIONS: Travel with a Purpose

Dominique Callimanopulos started Elevate Destinations in an effort to repair the estranged relationship that travelers often have with native communities around the world. Her interest in calming this tension was so strong that it became the central focus of her academic and professional career. As Wesleyan University Dominique wrote her anthropology thesis on the impact of tourism in the Seychelle Islands, a mission that inspired her later work to combine travel, non-profit organizations, and philanthropists into one rewarding business venture.
Since then, every Elevate Destinations trip has been planned to benefit both environmental preservation and community development. In order to ensure that the mission of Elevate Destinations is always in the forefront, they only hire commited individuals who show tremendous ability and personal integrity. Elevate Destinations makes bridging travel and philanthropy easy-they'll even donate funds to a specific group of your choosing. Their new online travel philanthropy program, Travel Matters, will allow travelers to donate to pre-screened, non-profit, and charity organizations in the countries that they visit beginning in Fall of 2006.
If you're interested in planning a trip through Elevate Destinations, you can choose from places like Kenya, South Africa, India, and Nepal-all traveled in luxury style of course. In Kenya, funds are donated to the Gallmann Africa Conservancy (www.gallmannkenya.org), an organization that's focused on protecting wildlife, environmental education, community service, and the preservation of tradition Kenyan culture. The conservancy was started 30 years ago by author Kuki Gallmann in the 100,000 acre wildlife reserve of Ol Ari Nyiro. Ol Ari Nyiro boasts extraordinary research and educational facilities in addition to the myriad of wildlife it plays home to. In South Africa money goes towards funding the South African Youth Leadership Initiative (SAYLI), an organization that works to strengthen young, socially oriented entrepreneurs who are commited to the UN Millennium Development Goals for Southern Africa. SAYLI encourages change by providing young leaders with a program that works with each individual to enhance their personal and professional work. In India funds go to the Floating Desert School whose mission is to bring education to rural areas through a "floating school" that can move around, serving a larger number of people than a traditional school could. The flexibility of the floating school model enables needs of specific villages to be met. The model is inherently flexible, adapting to the needs of each dynamic and particular village.
Elevate Destinations also provides funding to the Thoreau Group's Tsunami relief efforts in India. This non-profit organization is dedicated to development and disaster relief and is currently working to provide funds to Tsunami victims on the islands of Andaman and Nicobar. These isolated islands are reported to have lost anywhere from 20% to 30% of their population-leaving some tribes with only a few survivors at best. In Nepal, Elevate Destinations funds the Nepalese Youth Opportunity (www.nyof.org), an organization that provides hope for poverty stricken children by providing financial support for schools, homes, and medical and nutritional programs. Elevate Destinations also works with the Society for Nature Conservation and Rural Development (SNCRD), a non government organization, founded six years ago by Lieutenant Colonel Hikat Bisht. The primary mission of SNCRD is to free Kamaiyas who are bonded laborers forced into slavery.
For those of you who believe in contributing to a greater cause while resting on sandy white shores, Elevate Destinations is for you. Elevate Destinations ability to innovate and create meaning in the oftentimes materialistic industry of luxury getaways is one that can inspire all of us to work towards a greater good. Elevate Destinations is proving that vacations can be about much more than 18 holes-and customers around the world are agreeing.

GINGER HOTELS
Ginger is a hotel that offers a simple idea in a well styled package. Their focus is clear: to successfully meet and exceed the needs of travelers. With this concept in mind, Ginger works to create comfortable spaces that are consistent, clean, convenient, affordable, and most importantly friendly. Their never ending quest to exceed the expectations of their guests and to stay on (and ahead of) industry trends puts them at the top of the affordable stay game.
The Ginger Hotel falls under the 'Smart Basics' category that promises to deliver what tired travelers really want, and to not confuse 'expensive' with 'better.' Ginger is capitalizing on the desire people have for functional things that are at the same time affordable and trendy (think IKEA). Ginger knows that today's busy travelers just want to feel like they made a good choice and did the right thing. In order to fulfill these wishes, Ginger has an especially innovative program for off schedule travelers. At their hotels you can retain your room for 24 hours after you officially check in for no extra charge, which means no more early morning checkouts after late night red eye flights. While Ginger has all the amenities of a regular hotel (gym, restaurant, etc), they also have little bonuses that the other guys just don't offer-proving that it really is the little things that keep customers coming back for more.
LIKE-A-LOCAL

Like-a-Local is a cool new travel idea started by Esther Weeber, Marieke van Os, and Mandy Mooren over the course of their many travels. The idea behind Like-a-Local is to offer authentic experiences to travelers who are looking to journey above and beyond the usual tourist offerings. With this program, travelers can make appointments to stay with locals from cities all over the world who share interests similar to their own. Through an online network, Like-a-Local links willing locals to eager travelers, resulting in real experiences that show what life on the other side is really like. Like-a-Local offers three different experience categories to choose from Live, Go, and Eat-each offering a different taste of local living.
LIVE gives visitors the opportunity to stay with a local resident for a night in nice areas that are far away from traditional tourist hotels. GO lets you choose from different activities that are all accompanied by an in the know local. Whether you're dancing at the Kwakoefestival, having a barbecue in the Amsterdam forest, or ice-skating at the Jaap Eden baan, you're sure to have a blast. While the EAT category is rather self-explanatory, the idea is still unique. EAT offers the chance for tourists to experience authentic, homegrown flavors of the cities they visit. Food choices range from snacks to formal, multi-course meals.
If Like-a-Local sounds like a dream come true, you can find their services in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Den Haag, Madrid, Barcelona, Porto, and Lissabon. And if you like surprising your travel companions, consider giving them a Like-a-Local voucher. Vouchers cover everything from intimate dinners to cruises on four season boats-and you can choose from a host of local activities and accommodations. Like-a-Local is proving that vacations don't have to be limited to resort packages and group tours. By providing an alternative for authenticity starved travelers, Like-a-Local is succeeding in disrupting the travel industry by personalizing vacations to a level not seen before.
